Our large rusty steel sunflower stands 115cm tall on a sturdy, gently curved stem formed from solid 10mm steel bar — tall enough to hold its own among your borders for years to come. The 16cm flower head is hand-shaped from heavy-gauge 2mm steel plate, with two overlapping rings of individually formed, three-dimensional petals fanning out around a domed centre — an inner ring and a second outer ring that tucks behind it, adding the depth and fullness of a real sunflower in full bloom. Three large 3D leaves are welded directly to the stem — two on one side, one on the other — giving the whole sculpture the asymmetric, naturalistic character of a living plant. Like all Ferric Garden sculptures, it arrives pre-rusted to a rich, mottled patina — ready to display from the moment it arrives.

That domed centre is where this sculpture earns its detail. Before welding, we press dimples into the reverse of the dome — emerging on the front face as a cluster of small, rounded protrusions that closely mimic the densely packed seeds of a real sunflower. Most makers settle for far less convincing techniques. Pressing cleanly into 2mm steel demands enormous, precisely controlled force — the kind that hammers can't deliver and commercial hydraulic presses are too slow to make practical. We solved it by building our own hand-operated press, along with a library of custom dies and formers refined over years of making.

The Myth of the Sunflower
In Greek mythology, the water nymph Clytie fell hopelessly in love with the sun god Helios. When he left her, she sat motionless for days — neither eating nor drinking — watching him cross the sky. The gods took pity and transformed her into a sunflower, forever turning its face toward the sun.
